Best Solar Blankets Compatible with a Motorized Reel

If you're buying a motorized retrofit kit, the blanket you put on top of the reel matters as much as the motor itself. The wrong blanket — too thin, off-brand, or wrong dimensions — ruins the experience: it tears at the leading edge, drags on the deck, or rolls unevenly because the bubbles are inconsistent. This guide covers the three blankets we recommend most often for motorized reel setups.

One disclaimer up front: we make the motor, not the blanket. The blanket recommendations below are based on what customers have used successfully with our motor kits over the past several seasons. We don't earn a commission on Amazon blanket sales — we just want to point you at blankets that work so the motor experience is good.

What makes a blanket work with a motorized reel

Three things matter when pairing a blanket with a motorized reel:

  1. Mil rating (thickness). 12-16 mil is the sweet spot. Below 12, the blanket flexes too much during roll-up and the leading edge tears. Above 16, the weight starts to challenge weaker motors.
  2. Bubble consistency. Cheap blankets have uneven bubble spacing and inconsistent thickness across the sheet. That makes the wrap diameter on the reel non-uniform — one side rolls up faster than the other and the blanket walks crooked across the deck.
  3. UV stability. A blanket exposed to direct sun in summer takes a beating. Generic Amazon covers with no listed UV rating usually disintegrate in one season. The bubbles separate from the sheet and you find them in the skimmer for the next three years.

The three blankets below all meet those criteria. We've seen them on hundreds of motorized installs without consistent failure.

Sun2Solar Crystal Clear 1600 (our top recommendation)

Sun2Solar has been making solar blankets longer than most, and the Crystal Clear 1600 is their workhorse residential line. It's clear/transparent (lets the most solar radiation through), 12-mil thick, and UV-stabilized.

Why we recommend it:

Where to buy: Available on Amazon and most pool retailers. Search Amazon for Sun2Solar Crystal Clear 1600 — pick the size matching your pool.

Best for: Most residential pools. Default recommendation unless you specifically want a heavier blanket.

Abimars 16 Mil Solar Blanket

Abimars has built a reputation for heavier-gauge blankets aimed at customers who want longer lifespan. The 16-mil construction is 30% thicker than standard 12-mil blankets and noticeably more durable.

Why we recommend it:

The catch: Heavier weight means more torque load on the motor. Older Lux Pool motor kits (pre-2024 inline design) can roll a 16-mil blanket but it's slower and harder on the battery. Our newer L-shaped design has 30% stronger motor and battery specifically for heavy blankets like Abimars 16 Mil. If you're buying a motor kit and Abimars together, get the L-shaped design.

Where to buy: Search Amazon for Abimars 16 Mil.

Best for: Pool owners who want one blanket that lasts 4-5 seasons rather than replacing every 2-3.

BigXwell Heavy 16-mil 20×40

BigXwell is the heaviest blanket we routinely see paired with motorized reels. The 16-mil construction is similar to Abimars but with slightly different bubble geometry and a heavier feel.

Why customers pick it:

The catch: Same as Abimars — the weight requires a stronger motor. The newer L-shaped Lux Pool design handles it without issue. Older inline motors can roll it but you'll see slower roll-up times (~120 seconds vs. 90 for a 12-mil).

Where to buy: Search Amazon for BigXwell 16-mil.

Best for: 20×40 pools in windy regions or owners who want maximum durability.

Our newer L-shaped motor design has 30% stronger torque and battery — it handles 16-mil Abimars and BigXwell blankets without breaking a sweat.

Blankets to avoid

Some categories we routinely see fail when paired with a motorized reel:

Sizing and trimming

Standard solar blankets come pre-sized for common pool dimensions (16×32, 18×36, 20×40, etc.). Buy the size matching your pool, or one size up if your dimensions are between standards.

If you need to trim:

  1. Lay the blanket flat on the deck, bubbles down
  2. Mark the trim line with a permanent marker
  3. Cut with sharp scissors or a utility knife
  4. Don't trim more than 1-2 inches off the long axis — the bubble pattern is structurally important to the sheet

For freeform pools, see the odd-shape guide. The short answer: trim to follow the pool perimeter but leave a 6-12 inch tab on one end that you can grip to drag the blanket off when you don't want to use the reel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best solar blanket for a motorized reel?

For most pools, Sun2Solar Crystal Clear 1600 (12-mil) — consistent bubbles, good lifespan, light enough for any motor. For maximum durability, Abimars 16 Mil or BigXwell Heavy 16-mil paired with the L-shaped Lux Pool motor kit.

Can I use any solar blanket with a motorized reel?

In theory yes, but cheap off-brand blankets have inconsistent bubble patterns that cause uneven rolling and short lifespans. Stick to Sun2Solar, Abimars, or BigXwell for reliable results.

Will a 16-mil blanket overload my motor?

It can on older inline motors — you'll see slower roll-up and faster battery drain. The newer L-shaped Lux Pool kit has 30% stronger motor and battery specifically for heavy 16-mil blankets and handles them without issue.

Clear or blue blanket — which works better?

Clear (transparent) transmits more solar radiation and yields water 1-2°F warmer than equivalent blue. Dark blue absorbs more heat at the surface but transmits less to the depth. For pool heating, clear wins by a hair.

How long does a 12-mil blanket last on a motorized reel?

2-3 seasons in moderate climates. The motor doesn't damage the blanket — if anything it extends life because you're not crumpling the cover daily. UV exposure is the main lifespan factor.

Can I leave the blanket out on the reel all winter?

Don't recommend it. UV and freeze-thaw kill the blanket over winter. Roll it onto the reel for daily use; for winter storage, roll it off the reel and store indoors or in a shed.

Do I need a specific blanket size for the L-shaped motor?

No — the motor doesn't care about blanket dimensions, only the tube it's mounted in. Match the blanket size to your pool, not the motor.
